Christopher S. Rice is the Enterprise Architect for Academic Technologies and User Experience with UKIT and the Social Technology Strategist in the Office of Undergraduate Education at the University of Kentucky. He received his B.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science with a Certificate in Social Theory from the University of Kentucky. He has, in the past, worked as Lecturer and Internship Director in the Department of Political Science at the University of Kentucky, Research Director of the University of Kentucky’s Appalachian Center and as Program Director of the Mountain Association for Community Economic Development. His current work focuses on the use of blogging, wikis, virtual worlds and other social media technologies in higher education programs and classrooms. His writing attempts to blend the development of critical political theory with the construction of political and digital ethnographies concerning issues of space and place. His dissertation, Discourses of Sustainability: Grassroots Organizations and Sustainable Community Development in Central Appalachia, examined the work of several grassroots and community-based organizations in promoting community sustainability in the region. His teaching interests include use of social technologies by political parties and political activists, pedagogy and social technologies, and modern & contemporary political theory. Currently, Christopher lives in Lexington, Kentucky with his wife and two young and energetic children. His oldest daughter graduated from college in the Spring of 2008 and doesn’t visit near enough.
